In this episode, we focus on mental health within the creative sector.
Sian Gale is the Skills and Development Manager at CULT Cymru – Creative Unions Learning Together – and runs first aid courses for Mental Health.
Heledd Owen is a graphic designer that set up a business during the pandemic. She shares messages of positivity and talks openly about her mental health through her social media platforms.
Whilst 1 in 4 people within the UK suffer from mental health problems each year, people within the creative sector are three times more likely to suffer from mental health issues.
Sian shared some of the issues that people in the creative sector face, and how these can impact their mental health:
In our latest report, State of Play, 68% of people in the television industry said that they thought about leaving the industry because of the strain, the long hours, the lack of respect they feel that they get on some productions, the lack of budget on some productions... Well, that isn’t good for anyone’s mental health.
Heledd talked about how mental health influences her art: “Because I’ve had experiences with my mental health in the past, it was really important to me that I use my work to share messages and positivity. Just to support people.”
