Happy Dydd Miwsig Cymru!

Dydd Miwsig Cymru (Welsh language music day) takes place on 10 February and celebrates all forms and genres of Welsh language music. It’s a day to discover new music, celebrate the Welsh tunes we love and to promote and explore Welsh language culture.

To mark the day at Creative Cardiff, Jess and Carys have picked out their favourite Welsh language tunes for Creative Cardiff’s Dydd Miwsig Cymru Playlist.

One of my favourite things about Cardiff’s creative sector is the diversity that’s brought forward through Wales’ bilingual culture, and nowhere is that on display more prominently than in our capital’s thriving music scene. Whilst not an especially confident Welsh language speaker myself, music has always been a way of connecting with Cymraeg in a way that felt inclusive and accessible to me. Whether it was learning the lyrics to the Welsh language songs I heard performed by male voice choirs growing up in the valleys, or being excited that my limited school girl Welsh extended to understanding the chorus in Gorky's Zygotic Mynci anthemic ‘Patio Song’, Welsh language music has been a big part of my seminal cultural experiences. It’s fantastic that Dydd Miwsig Cymru is shining a light on the innovative and ground-breaking work of Welsh language artists, and helping bring ‘miwsig yn Cymraeg’ to wider audiences throughout the UK and internationally. And with important platforms like Tafwyl and Swn Festival going from strength to strength in the city, long may it continue.

Dydd Miwsig Cymru is a fantastic opportunity to share the best of Welsh music far and wide! Most of my first cultural experiences involved miwsig Cymraeg, from the Eisteddfod to Maes B, to Gŵyl Rhif 6 to Tafwyl, the soundtrack to my most formative years almost completely consists of Welsh language music. I have so many favourite Welsh language artists and it’s hard to pick just a few to mention- but at the moment, I can’t stop listening to Gruff Rhys, Gwenno, Kim Hon, Sister Wives, Los Blancos, Sage Todz, Adwaith and the two brilliant artists who performed at our Festive Party – Dead Method and Danielle Lewis! Jess and I hope you enjoy our playlist, which includes some of these artists and many more.
